The many different designs of IOM sailed at the WMRMYC

Our club members sail a number of different designs of International One Metre yachts. That mix is regularly changing, as some members search for a new or more competitive boat or maybe just grab the opportunity to pick up a good second-hand IOM.

Some can’t help themselves, and keep building, altering and designing new fibreglass and woody IOMs hoping to crack the ultimate design refinement. One of our more prolific builders tends to sell them off shortly after building to afford more materials for the next one and so not annoy their partner by cluttering up the house with prototypes. One or 2 are looking into 3D printing options, but more about that in another article one day….

Our handicap race days are essential with this mix of new and older boats as it gives everyone a crack at a win, but some of the older designs do well in scratch racing as well, which is a testament to their skippers. Here’s an interesting link to a 2019 NZ article on ‘Boat Design and Regatta Results

Many of the older and home built designs come out to play on our Thursday’ “social sailing days”, but there’s still a good mix on regular race days. Some boats are immaculately presented, whilst others look like they had a very rough life indeed, but importantly they all still have fun and get amongst the action on social and race days.

Here’s a list and gallery of some members boats sailing at our venues over the last month (August 2024). There are quite a few more designs in the club. Many of the ‘home built’ boats are variations on existing designs, but I was unable to ascertain their design origins. Apologies for that lack of info where missing.
